חלל. אמצע האלף השלישי. בעקבות גידול האוכלוסייה במושבות קטאן הארציות, מחליטה ממשלת כדור הארץ על הקמת מושבות נוספות על גבי כוכבי לכת במערכות שמש בלתי מיושבות. אתם ממריאים בספינות החלל שלכם אל מערכות כוכבי לכת רחוקות, במטרה להקים מושבות חדשות, אך גם לדאוג לטיפוח קשרי סחר משגשגים עם עמי המועצה הגלקטית. בתחילת דרככם דאג כדור הארץ לצייד אתכם במשאבים, אך ככל שהמרחק גדל, גדל הצורך שלכם לדאוג להישרדותכם. עליכם לחקור את נתיבי מערכת השמש ולהקים בה מושבות מניבות, להקים תחנות חלל ולבנות חלליות חדשות שיאפשרו לכם לעמוד במשימתכם.

מכשול נוסף בדרככם היא כנופיית הפיראטים הגלקטית, שנקבצה יחדיו תחת דגל הפיראטים השחור. אלו מגיחים מבסיסים מוסווים ותוקפים עם חלליותיהם, החמושות היטב על פי רוב, את חלליות הסחר של העמים שוחרי השלום.
